Old General Hospital Demolition Nearly Complete
Demolition crews in Sault Ste. Marie are preparing to bring down the final corner of the former General Hospital this week, marking the end of a long-running teardown on the city’s waterfront.
City project manager Larry Girardi says once the last piece falls, the site will finally be cleared after sitting vacant for more than a decade. Under the city’s agreement with Green Infrastructure Partners, a full redevelopment master plan is required within 36 months.
Mayor Matthew Shoemaker says removing the derelict structure opens the door for new housing and economic development, adding that the cleared waterfront property could build on the momentum of major residential projects already underway across the community.
