City Council Vote Could Trigger One-Year Freeze for Data Centre's
City councillors in Sault Ste. Marie will vote Monday on whether to pause all large-scale data-centre development for a full year. The proposed interim control bylaw would stop major projects from moving forward while the city updates its rules, studies neighbourhood impact, and considers long-term environmental and infrastructure concerns.
The debate comes as the Yates Road data centre, approved under older zoning last year, continues to rise. That build is allowed to proceed, but councillors say its approval highlighted gaps in how the city handles larger proposals. Residents have raised questions about noise, power demand, and what happens decades from now if facilities outlive their usefulness.
Public pressure has grown in recent weeks, with protests at city hall and hundreds of online comments calling for clearer safeguards and stronger oversight. Monday’s decision will determine whether the city imposes a temporary freeze, expands public-notice requirements, and requires more detailed studies before any major build is considered.
