Joyce Family Foundation Gives $1.5M to Algoma University

A historic gift to Algoma University will help local students overcome financial barriers to higher education.

The Joyce Family Foundation has donated $1.5 million to create a new bursary program that will provide 12 students with $5,000 per year for up to four years.

The bursaries are aimed at students who demonstrate financial need and resilience, including Indigenous learners and first-generation university students.

Colin Wilson, Vice-President of Advancement and External Relations at Algoma University, says the endowment is the largest in the university's history and will help students focus on their studies rather than financial stress.

University officials say the donation will not only support students but could also help attract and retain talent in Sault Ste. Marie for years to come.
