Sault Police Put Crime Stoppers Partnership on Hold after Cyber Security Incident
A cybersecurity incident affecting Crime Stoppers reporting programs across Canada has prompted the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service to temporarily suspend its partnership with the organization.
Police say the decision was made out of an abundance of caution as they review the potential scope and impact of the incident. The affected reporting platform is not connected to Sault Police information systems or infrastructure.
Crime Stoppers allows members of the public to provide information about crimes anonymously. Sault Police say protecting the privacy, safety and anonymity of tipsters is essential to maintaining public trust.
During the suspension, residents can report crimes or public safety concerns directly to Sault Police by calling 705-949-6300, visiting the station or using the online reporting system at https://saultpolice.ca/reporting.
Police caution that reporting information directly to them does not provide the same anonymity as the Crime Stoppers program.
