Sault Ste. Marie Election Results Bring New Faces To City Council
The results are in following Sault Ste. Marie's 2026 municipal election, with Mayor Matthew Shoemaker securing a second term and voters choosing who will represent them at City Hall for the next four years.
Shoemaker received 12,360 votes, defeating his challengers and earning another term as mayor. While the mayor's seat remains unchanged, the makeup of city council will look different, with several new faces elected and some incumbents losing their seats.
In Ward 1, Brent Derochie and Logan Costa won the two council seats, while Ward 2 councillor Luke Dufour secured another term alongside newcomer Stephanie Pagnucco. Ward 3 also saw a significant shake-up, with Gary Trembinski and Luis Moreno elected after both incumbents were defeated. Wards 4 and 5 saw more continuity, with incumbents returning to council.
Voter turnout reached just over 40 per cent, reflecting the participation of residents in deciding the city's political leadership and priorities.
With the election behind them, attention now turns to the challenges facing the incoming council. Economic development and job creation remain major concerns, particularly as Sault Ste. Marie continues to navigate uncertainty surrounding the local steel industry. Attracting new investment, advancing major development opportunities and supporting local businesses will be important considerations over the next four years.
