"Walk for Records" to Protect Residential School Files

The Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA) brought community members together in Sault Ste. Marie for the “Walk for the Records,” calling attention to the future of thousands of Residential School Survivor records.

The September 29 walk began at Whitefish Island and continued to Shingwauk Hall at Algoma University, bringing participants together in support of preserving Survivor testimony and remembering the history of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School site.

Under the current court-ordered process, records will be destroyed on September 19, 2027 unless Survivors choose to receive a copy or preserve their records at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre at Algoma University continues to preserve archival material documenting the history and legacy of Residential Schools, with its work guided by Survivor voices and the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association.
