Province Invests $2 Million to Fight Invasive Species From Spreading
Ontario has committed $2 million to support community-led efforts aimed at slowing the spread of invasive species across the province. The funding is distributed through the Invasive Species Action Fund, backing 112 projects in municipalities, First Nations, conservation authorities, and research groups.
The investment comes as northern Ontario faces increasing pressure from invasive plants and aquatic species moving northward.
In Sault Ste. Marie, giant hogweed has been identified along the leading edge of its spread. The plant’s sap is phototoxic, capable of causing severe burns, blistering, and temporary blindness. Local teams are using provincial funding to map high-risk locations, remove plants, and educate property owners.
The province’s strategy emphasizes prevention, noting that invasive species cost the Canadian economy over $4 billion annually in environmental and economic damage. The Action Fund aims to reduce long-term costs by supporting communities before species become entrenched.
