The Brickspace Rebuilds Old Memorial Gardens Arena In Miniature

The original Memorial Gardens may be gone, but a local creator is bringing it back piece by piece.

Derek Pearce, owner of Brickspace, has designed a detailed 445-piece building-block model of the historic Sault Ste. Marie arena — complete with a removable roof, interior ice surface, flags, wood carvings, and multiple swappable modules that transform the space from hockey to motocross to Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Pearce says the idea started with a simple question: which local landmarks matter most to people in the Sault? After releasing models of the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, the Cross on the Hill, and other well-known sites, he turned his attention to Memorial Gardens, a building many newcomers never saw, but one longtime residents still remember.

The design process begins digitally using Bricklink Studio, a platform now owned by Lego. Pearce builds the model on screen, generates a full parts list, and sources bricks from both Lego and third-party suppliers to get the exact colours needed.

Once the digital version is complete, he assembles a physical prototype using pieces from his own collection. The Memorial Gardens model shown today is that prototype, built just in time for upcoming local events.

Brickspace continues to expand its catalog, with more models planned, including the Memorial Tower to pair along side the Memorial Gardens Arena.
