Sault Ste. Marie Data Centre Plans Leave Residents Feeling Unheard
A proposed 5-megawatt data centre in Sault Ste. Marie is raising serious concerns among residents who say the project could reshape neighbourhoods, strain local water resources, and introduce noise and emissions that families aren’t prepared for. The facility planned for the city’s west end, would support AI-driven computing, but protesters argue the approval process lacked transparency and didn’t address how the development could affect nearby homes.
At a protest outside City Hall, residents voiced fears about water consumption, constant noise from cooling systems, and the possibility of exhaust from backup generators drifting into residential areas. Many say the Sault’s quiet neighbourhoods and proximity to the Great Lakes make the stakes higher than in larger cities where data centres are more common. They worry this first facility could set a precedent for future data centres, opening the door to larger AI operations with far greater demands on water, electricity, and local infrastructure.
Protesters also raised concerns about the absence of environmental assessments, Indigenous consultation, and clear communication from the city.
Some residents say they were blindsided by the December approval and want council to revisit the decision with full public input. Others fear property values could be affected if industrial-scale computing expands closer to residential areas — especially if additional proposals come forward.
