Patrick Hunter Brings Turtle Island Story to Royal Canadian Mint Coin
Patrick Hunter's artwork is now part of Canadian history.
The Ojibwe artist's Turtle Island design has been featured on a new Royal Canadian Mint fine silver collector coin, bringing an important Indigenous creation story to audiences across Canada.
Inspired by the Ojibwe story of Turtle Island, the coin depicts the muskrat's courageous dive beneath the waters to retrieve the soil needed to create life on the turtle's back. Hunter says immortalizing a story that has been passed down for generations on a coin that will last forever is a tremendous honour.
In this story, Patrick discusses the meaning behind the design, preserving Indigenous culture through art, and seeing his work displayed everywhere from NHL arenas to a nationally released Royal Canadian Mint coin.
