Sault College Urges Community to Help House Students

Sault College is facing one of its most challenging housing seasons in years, with more than 45 incoming students still searching for a safe and affordable place to live before the fall semester begins. Staff say the waitlist has grown steadily since April, and the tight rental market in Sault Ste. Marie is making it harder for first-year students to secure rooms.

The college’s residence buildings are already at full capacity, offering just over 280 beds for a student population that exceeds 4,000 learners across full-time, part-time, and apprenticeship programs.

With limited on-campus space, the college relies heavily on the community to help house students — but this year, the number of available private rentals has dropped significantly.

Housing staff say they are working daily with students and landlords, making calls, reviewing listings, and trying to match students with safe, reliable options. Some students report checking rental sites multiple times per day, competing with dozens of others for the same room. A few say they may have to delay their studies if they cannot secure housing in time.

The college is asking local residents with spare bedrooms, basement units, or short-term rentals to consider opening them to students for the upcoming school year. Even a handful of new listings could make a major difference for those still waiting.

If you have a room available or want to learn more about becoming a student landlord, visit the Sault College housing page or www.places4students.com.
