Wildfire Smoke Forces Widespread Closures Across Sault Ste. Marie
Wildfire smoke drifting into Sault Ste. Marie has pushed local air quality into the “very high risk” range, forcing the City to close all outdoor pools, splash pads, and the Downtown Plaza. Outdoor sporting events at Elliott Sports Complex and Strathclair Park have also been cancelled as thick smoke settles over the region.
Environment Canada reported the Air Quality Health Index at 10+, the highest risk category, meaning the smoke can pose serious health impacts for residents — especially children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung conditions.
Algoma Public Health is urging people to limit outdoor activity, avoid strenuous exercise, and stay indoors with windows closed until conditions improve.
City officials say these closures are precautionary but necessary to protect residents, volunteers, and staff from the effects of wildfire smoke.
Symptoms can include coughing, headaches, difficulty breathing, and irritation of the eyes or throat. Anyone experiencing severe or persistent symptoms is encouraged to seek medical advice.
The City will continue monitoring air quality throughout the day and will reopen outdoor facilities only when conditions are safe.
