Mattagami First Nation Residents Returning Home After Wildfire Evacuation
Residents of Mattagami First Nation are finally heading home after nearly two weeks of evacuation due to a nearby wildfire.
Close to 200 community members were forced to leave as the fire burned dangerously close, growing to more than 3,100 hectares at its peak. The wildfire, located west of Gogama and near the community, prompted leaders to make the difficult decision to evacuate.
Now, with the fire classified as “being held,” officials say conditions have improved enough for residents to begin returning starting Monday morning.
Chief Jennifer Constant describes the evacuation as filled with “fear and uncertainty,” as families left behind homes, belongings, and livelihoods. For many, concerns extended beyond property — including whether they would be able to keep their pets with them during the evacuation.
Now, that fear is giving way to relief, as a coordinated return plan helps ensure everyone can safely head home together. Fire crews remain in the area to continue suppression and monitoring efforts as the community transitions back.
