Record Heat and Uncontrolled Wildfires Across Northwestern Ontario
Northwestern Ontario is facing dangerous conditions as extreme heat and major wildfires continue across the region. Thunder Bay is nearing 40°C, levels that could break historical daily records, while Fort Frances 14 and 15 have grown past 1,500 hectares and remain not under control.
Crews are working on both fires with helicopters, waterbombers, and ground teams, and a N-O-T-A-M is in effect over Fort Frances 14. Smoke is visible across parts of Quetico Provincial Park, where closures are now in place.
In Sault Ste. Marie, the wildland fire near the airport is now classified as Being Held, with no threat to public safety and airport operations unaffected.
Officials continue urging residents to stay hydrated, follow fire restrictions, avoid unnecessary burning, and monitor updates as hot, dry conditions persist.
