Volunteer opportunities
Our volunteer program allows community members to participate in local broadcast productions, whether you have some TV experience or none at all. We offer many learning opportunities from studio environments to on-location shoots and larger event coverage involving mobile broadcast production trucks. Workshops and hands-on training is available for an array of roles. Below are the most commonly available positions at Rogers tv.
Camera Operator
A Camera Operator, plays a critical role in capturing high-quality footage for various types of productions, including live mobile productions and news gathering. This role helps to develop skills in frame composition, smooth camera movements and some technical expertise.
Audio
Audio operators often find themselves in studio productions or on-location mobile productions. This volunteer is responsible to set up all microphones, cues CD’s and mixes the sound sources during the production; including studio microphones, music and sound from videos.
Floor Director
The Floor Director is the Director’s right-hand, helping with sound checks, and making the talent comfortable. When the production is underway, the Floor Director gives cues to talent throughout, ensuring everyone is aware of timing and if they’re in a break.
Switcher
This role is often combined with being a Director In this role, the Switcher selects the video source the viewers will see. From various camera angles, to replay sources and graphics information, the look and feel of the show is largely determined by this role.
Graphics Operator
This role oversees all applications of graphics for the production. This can include animated titles, name fonts and, in the case of live sports, updating score boards during the event. Volunteers in this role will hone their skills in being detail oriented.
Production Assistant
A Production Assistant plays a crucial role supporting the Director and ensuring the production runs smoothly. They are focused on keeping the production on schedule and ensuring adherence to the script, including reminding the Director of any overlooked aspects of the production.
On Air Talent
On-Air Talent are the people in front of the camera. This can include hosting a show or reporting on a local event. They present the topic in a variety of ways from having a conversation interviewing community members, to reading a scripted teleprompter or introducing a video clip.
