New Homelessness Prevention Pilot in Sault Ste. Marie Targets Early Intervention
A new prevention-focused initiative is launching in Sault Ste. Marie, aimed at keeping people housed before they reach a crisis point.
The one-year pilot, led by the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board in partnership with the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness, is backed by $565,000 in federal funding and focuses on early intervention to reduce homelessness in the community.
The program will fund housing stability workers who provide in-home support, landlord mediation, financial guidance, and connections to services helping individuals and families remain in their homes and avoid eviction.
The initiative sets a measurable goal of keeping 42 people housed over the next year, representing nearly a 14 percent reduction in known homelessness locally by March 2027.
Local partners including social services, Indigenous-led organizations and community agencies are working together to deliver coordinated, culturally appropriate support.
The project will also track results and share what works nationally, helping other communities across Canada adopt prevention-focused approaches to homelessness.
