Sault Area Hospital Highlights Growing Mental Health Crisis Across Ontario
Healthcare workers in Sault Ste. Marie say mental health and addiction challenges are becoming increasingly complex as demand for services continues rising across Northern Ontario and the province.
At Sault Area Hospital, officials say substance use is increasingly overlapping with mental health concerns, creating more difficult cases for healthcare workers and placing added pressure on local supports and hospital services.
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, one in five Canadians experience a mental health challenge every year, while nearly half of Canadians will experience a mental illness by the age of 40. Youth and young adults continue to see some of the fastest rising rates of anxiety and depression nationwide.
Statistics Canada has also reported significant increases in anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms in recent years, while hospitals across Ontario continue seeing growing numbers of mental health and substance use-related emergency department visits.
Healthcare providers in Northern Ontario say rural and northern communities face additional challenges including limited access to specialists, long wait times, housing instability, addictions concerns, and barriers to accessing consistent care.
Sault Area Hospital continues offering a range of mental health and addictions supports including psychotherapy, concurrent disorders treatment, eating disorder services, trauma and substance use programs, postpartum mental health supports, and early psychosis intervention programs. The hospital has also partnered with community organizations across the region to improve access to housing, addictions, and mental health services.
If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available locally through Sault Area Hospital, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and ConnexOntario’s free 24/7 mental health and addictions support services.
