Meet the Entrepreneurs Helping Drivers Dodge Potholes in Sault Ste. Marie
Sault Ste. Marie is deep into another brutal pothole season, and the impact is being felt in every part of the city. But this year, two local entrepreneurs are stepping up with their own homegrown solutions to help residents deal with the damage in a more organized and informed way.
Developer Brent Rouble, creator of SpotFix.ca, has built a simple reporting tool that lets residents document potholes in seconds. The app automatically compiles photos, GPS locations, and key details into a clean report that road crews can use to respond faster and prioritize the worst areas. It’s designed to make the reporting process easier for residents while giving the city clearer information during its busiest repair season.
Across town, Wil McBride and his partner KO Pomian run the Pothole Surveillance Unit a community-driven project that tracks road hazards using volunteer reports and digital mapping. Their goal is to give residents a clearer picture of what’s happening on the streets day-to-day and help people avoid costly damage before it happens. The project has grown into a small but dedicated network of people who keep an eye on trouble spots and share what they see.
Both projects share the same mission: keeping people informed, supporting the city’s limited resources, and helping Sault Ste. Marie stay ahead of a problem that affects every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian. Together, these two innovators are showing how simple tech and community involvement can make a real difference, especially during a season when the roads change from one day to the next.
