Energy Investments Aim to Power Northern Ontario's Future

Six First Nations along the North Shore are increasing their ownership in the East-West Tie transmission line from 3.5% to 20%, supported by a $75-million provincial loan guarantee. Ontario says the deal strengthens Indigenous participation in the energy sector and supports long-term economic reconciliation.

The federal government says its new National Electricity Strategy could mean major opportunities for workers in Northwestern Ontario as electricity demand is expected to double by 2050. Ottawa also says electrification could lower overall household energy costs, with up to seven in ten families paying less as spending on gas and heating fuels declines.

The 450-kilometre East-West Tie runs between Wawa and Thunder Bay, improving grid reliability and supporting mining and industrial growth across the region. Hydro One and NextEra say more than 300 Indigenous community members were hired during construction, with training delivered through Confederation College.
