Sault Ste. Marie City Council Moves Forward on Fixing Hazardous East-End Intersection
The City of Sault Ste. Marie is taking a serious look at long-needed improvements in the east end, where the Dacey–Trunk Road intersection has been a safety concern for years.
Drivers have struggled with the sharp angle, poor visibility, and winter snowbanks that make the corner especially dangerous, while students walking to White Pines Collegiate continue to cross Trunk Road without traffic signals.
Now, early discussions involving the City, Batchewana First Nation, and Huron Central Railway are exploring a possible new connection between Dacey Road and Frontenac Street, a change that could significantly reshape traffic flow and improve safety throughout the neighbourhood.
City council has directed staff to study a fully signalized intersection linking Dacey Road, Trunk Road, and Frontenac Street, while also examining feasibility, costs, and potential funding options.
Because the rail line separates Dacey and Frontenac, Huron Central Railway is a key partner in the planning, and Batchewana First Nation is already involved through a broader Community Economic Development Initiative.
If the project receives support and funding, construction could begin as early as 2027.
