$7.4 Million restoration work in its final stages for Sault Ste. Marie's Canal's Power House
The historic Powerhouse at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site is getting a new lease on life.
Built in 1895, this sandstone structure once powered the world’s first electrically operated lock.
Over the decades, the Powerhouse suffered from serious water infiltration and foundation damage, leaving the future of this national landmark uncertain.
Now, with the support of a 7.4 million dollar federal investment — bringing the total project funding to nearly 14 million when combined with earlier work — Parks Canada is leading a multi-year restoration effort firsthand.
Once complete, visitors will not only see the engineering ingenuity of the past but also experience it firsthand. The Powerhouse will serve as a cultural hub, educational exhibit, and preserved landmark for generations to come.
