Sault Ste. Marie City Council Pushes for National Forest Firefighting Training Centre
Sault Ste. Marie City Council is making a formal request to the federal government to consider establishing a national forest firefighting agency in the community. The proposed agency would serve as a central hub for wildfire response, training and coordination.
Officials say Sault Ste. Marie is well positioned to host such an initiative because of the region’s existing expertise in wildfire management and its geographic location in Northern Ontario. Council members argue that by situating the agency in the Sault, the country would benefit from improved emergency readiness while the local economy would see growth through the creation of new jobs and infrastructure.
