Sault Ste. Marie's Goose Herding Initiative to Cost $70K Annually
City officials in Sault Ste. Marie are preparing to tackle a growing problem along the city’s waterfront, trails, and public parks: an increasing number of Canada geese leaving behind significant amounts of droppings, creating hygiene and safety concerns for residents and visitors alike.
A proposed goose management plan is set to be referred to the 2026 budget, with city staff estimating that hiring professional contractors to handle cleanup could cost up to $70,000 annually. Councilors are also reviewing a range of innovative deterrent strategies designed to keep geese away from public spaces. These methods include high-tech lasers, life-like coyote decoys, and even fireworks, all aimed at reducing the impact of geese in heavily used recreational areas.
