Sault Ste. Marie's Whitefish Island’s Past Revisited in New Canal Exhibit

A major update at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site is shifting how history is told.

Newly installed interpretive panels are reshaping how visitors understand this iconic site, by acknowledging its location on the traditional territory of the Anishinabek and Métis peoples. These updates bring long-overdue recognition to the First Nations and Métis histories that predate the canal — and the impact its construction had on their ways of life.
