Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services Receive 324 Life-Saving Smoke & CO Alarms Through Safety Program
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services has received 324 new combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as part of the province-wide Safe Community Project Zero initiative, a safety program funded by Enbridge Gas in partnership with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.
The donation, valued at more than 32,000 dollars, supports the fire department’s ongoing prevention efforts, including outreach to vulnerable residents and seniors through programs like Project ASAP. With carbon monoxide calls increasing during the colder months and winter heating now in full swing, fire officials say these alarms will play a critical role in reducing fire and CO-related injuries and deaths across the community.
Sault Ste. Marie is one of 75 Ontario communities participating in the initiative, which is distributing more than 14,000 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms across the province. Fire Chief Peter Johnson says the devices will help residents stay compliant with Ontario’s upcoming regulation, taking effect January 1, 2026, that will require carbon monoxide alarms on every level of all homes.
In addition to distributing the new alarms, Sault Fire Service continues conducting home visits, checking existing detectors, educating residents on fire-escape planning, and reminding homeowners to test alarms regularly. With many seniors on fixed incomes unable to replace aging devices, the new donation directly supports those most at risk.
