Celebrating 20 Years of Connection: 2026 Algoma University's Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow
Thousands to gather at the GFL Memorial Gardens this Valentines day weekend to mark a significant milestone in Indigenous cultural celebration: The 20th Annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow, hosted by Algoma University. The two-day event, held February 14–15, 2026, drew dancers, drummers, vendors, families, and visitors from across Turtle Island for what organizers described as one of the largest and most meaningful pow wows in the region. What began in 2005 as a small, student-led initiative through Algoma University’s Anishinaabe Initiatives Division and the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association has grown into a vibrant annual tradition emphasizing Anishinaabe culture, lifelong learning, community healing, and joy. Grand Entries kickes off Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Sunday’s at 12:00 p.m., filling the arena with the powerful heartbeat of host drums, the flash of jingle cones, the sweep of fancy dance bustles, and the grounded steps of traditional dancers. Elders received honors, veterans were recognized, and intertribal dances welcomed everyone into the circle.
Admission followed a community-minded model: a weekend pass cost $10 (or free with two non-perishable food items donated to local food banks), with daily entry at $5 and free access for Elders 60+ and children under 5. The pow wow also highlighted Algoma University’s Special Mission, showcasing the institution as a welcoming space for Indigenous students and promoting opportunities within the community. Vendors offer traditional foods, handmade crafts, and regalia, while the atmosphere buzzed with reunions, teachings, and laughter.
