Harvest Algoma Strengthens 2026 Goals with New Leadership Amid Rising Food Insecurity

Harvest Algoma is entering a significant period of transition as food insecurity continues to intensify across the Algoma District, prompting the organization to strengthen its leadership and long-term strategic direction. In response to growing pressures on local families and community agencies, the Board of Directors has appointed David Thompson as executive director, a move aimed at reinforcing stability, expanding capacity, and supporting the organization’s continued growth. Thompson brings a strong background in community development, applied research, and northern and rural service delivery—experience that positions him to guide Harvest Algoma through a moment of rising demand and evolving regional needs.

His appointment follows a year of notable expansion for Harvest Algoma, which distributed nearly 500,000 pounds of food to 59 agencies across the district. Since stepping into the role, Thompson has worked closely with staff, volunteers, food banks, and community partners to stabilize inbound food logistics, address gaps in supply, and strengthen coordination among agencies. His ongoing leadership of the Rural Agri-Innovation Network further supports efforts to build a more resilient and interconnected regional food system, ensuring that food continues to move efficiently to the communities that rely on it.

The Board has emphasized that this leadership shift is not simply a response to immediate pressures but a strategic investment in the organization’s future. With demand increasing and community needs becoming more complex, Harvest Algoma is advancing its 2026 priorities with renewed focus on operational readiness, partnership development, and long-term planning. Strengthening relationships across the district remains central to this work, as the organization collaborates with regional partners to scale food rescue efforts and deepen its impact.

Harvest Algoma’s direction reflects a commitment to responding from a place of confidence rather than crisis. By expanding leadership capacity and reinforcing what is already working, the organization is positioning itself to meet rising needs while building a durable foundation for the years ahead. Thompson’s appointment marks a key step in this evolution, supporting Harvest Algoma’s mission to ensure that food reaches the individuals, families, and communities who need it most.
