Sault Ste. Marie Legion Launches Poppy Campaign to Support Veterans

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 has officially launched its annual Poppy Campaign in Sault Ste. Marie with a ceremonial flag raising outside the courthouse. This meaningful tradition, which runs until Remembrance Day on November 11, honors the sacrifices of Canadian veterans while raising vital funds to support them and their families. Each year, more than 18 million poppies and 70,000 wreaths are distributed across Canada and overseas, serving as powerful symbols of remembrance and gratitude.

Locally, Branch 25 distributes around 60,000 poppies throughout the city. Last year’s campaign raised an impressive $114,000, which was used to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to veterans in need, as well as bursaries for their family members, support for the Sault Area Hospital, and funding for local cadet programs. This year, over 80 cadets from four corps will assist as taggers on weekends, joined by an additional 50 to 55 volunteers who will be stationed at high-traffic locations such as Walmart, Giant Tiger, Princess Auto, and local malls. The Legion is actively encouraging more community members—whether veterans, Legion members, or the general public—to volunteer as poppy taggers.

This year’s campaign also coincides with the installation of a new citation plaque honoring William Merrifield, Sault Ste. Marie’s only Victoria Cross recipient from World War I. The original plaque was stolen in June 2024 and never recovered, but thanks to the generosity of Local 2251 and Lock City Monuments, a new one has been installed at the Cenotaph. Merrifield’s legacy stands as a symbol of the bravery, service, and sacrifice of all who have served.

Pierre Breckenridge, president of Branch 25 and chair of the Poppy Campaign, emphasized the importance of both financial support and symbolic gestures. While donations are crucial to sustaining programs for veterans, simply wearing a poppy is a powerful act of remembrance. He encourages everyone to reflect on the service and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans and to participate in any way they can.

To volunteer, donate, or purchase a wreath, visit the Poppy Room at 96 Great Northern Road or call 705-945-8497. Every poppy worn and every dollar donated helps ensure that veterans and their families receive the care and recognition they deserve.
