Syrian Independence Flag Raised in Sault Ste. Marie

On November 7th 2025, members of the Syrian community in Sault Ste. Marie gathered downtown to celebrate a historic and emotional moment — the raising of the Syrian independence flag outside the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.

The flag, representing Syria’s liberation from the Assad regime in December 2024, now joins the city’s growing gallery of international flags that symbolize diversity, resilience, and unity. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, Local Immigration Partnership coordinator Syed Islam, and Syrian residents who expressed pride in seeing their heritage honored in a public space.

This event was more than a flag raising — it was a statement of freedom, hope, and solidarity. For many Syrian Canadians, the flag represents not only their homeland’s struggle but also their contributions to the multicultural fabric of Sault Ste. Marie.

The city first invited the Syrian community to raise their flag in 2022, but members chose to wait until a symbol aligned with their aspirations for independence.

Today, the flag stands tall as a reminder of resilience, cultural pride, and the importance of inclusion in Canadian communities.
