Veteran Officer Brent Duguay Becomes New Chief at Sault Ste. Marie Police Service
After more than three decades in uniform, Brent Duguay has officially been sworn in as the new Chief of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, fulfilling what he calls “the only job I ever wanted.”
Duguay’s appointment marks the culmination of a distinguished career that began in 1994 when he joined the force as a patrol officer.
Over the years, he has served in the Uniform Patrol Division, Drug Enforcement, and Crime Suppression units, as well as with the Biker Enforcement Unit. His background also includes work as a use-of-force instructor at the Ontario Police College and as a trainer for the next generation of local officers.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Duguay reflected on his lifelong connection to the community and to policing itself. Surrounded by fellow officers, family, and civic leaders, he pledged to continue the service’s mission of community engagement, safety, and integrity — values he says will guide his leadership.
As the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service transitions under new command, Duguay takes the reins at a time of evolving policing challenges — from drug enforcement and organized crime to recruitment and modernization. His focus, he says, will be on maintaining transparency, strengthening public trust, and ensuring officers have the resources they need to keep the community safe.
City officials and residents have welcomed the appointment, noting Duguay’s deep roots in the community and his reputation as a steady, approachable leader. His experience across multiple divisions gives him a broad understanding of both frontline operations and strategic management.
