In Focus: Raise The Spirit
In Focus: Raise The Spirit traces the history of the Oro African Methodist Episcopal Church built by black settlers in 1849 in Oro Township. It stood within the government sponsored Wilberforce Settlement. Presently the church is all that remains. It serves as a symbol of the spirit and pride of the descendants of those early day settlers. Through In Focus: Raise The Spirit, these descendants share with Rogers tv Documentary Producer, Steve McEown, their story and their history. “This is as much stepping back in time and paying tribute as it is a celebration of culture. This Simcoe County landmark is truly steeped in history”, comments McEown. In 2009 the Oro African Methodist Episcopal Church celebrated its 160th Anniversary. The building is a national historic site of Canada and locally serves as a visible reminder of the contributions and achievements of Black Settlers, the hardships they faced during that time and their perseverance for a better life.
