In Focus: Remembering Our Warriors

On Saturday, April 27th, 2013, The City Of Toronto hosted the bi-centennial commemoration of the Battle Of York; a battle that marked a turning point in the War Of 1812. Leading up to that commemoration, representatives from the Chippewas of Rama and Georgina and Beausoleil First Nations banded together and formed a committee to recognize local warriors for their participation in that conflict. Thus began a journey of discovery for “The Chippewas Of Lakes Huron and The Simcoe War of 1812 Commemoration Circle.” The search was on for the identities of the brave warriors who rode along side Chief Tecumseh given his alliance with the British to stave off the American invasion. This is a story of hope and despair; highlighting the achievements of First Nations warriors in all conflicts leading up to present day. Interviews with First Nations veterans and their descendants illustrate the crucial role First Nations people played throughout our military history. When the War Of 1812 began former U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson believed: “The acquisition of Canada this year will be a mere matter of marching”. As you will hear in this documentary, had it not been for First Nations Warriors, this prophecy may very well have come true.
