Simcoe County Museum Virtual Speaker Series

Simcoe County Museum Virtual Speaker Series

2025 marks the 80th Anniversary of what is known in the Netherlands as the Sweetest of Springs when the Canadian army liberated the country from German occupation. But for the Canadians carrying out the liberation it was a bittersweet time for each day from the end of March until the war’s end on May 5, 1945 soldiers died or were wounded in actions ranging from facing small ambushes to full out battles to seize a town from fanatically resisting German soldiers and Dutch SS. Mark Zuehlke will take us through this fascinating and complex story which draws on his Canadian Battle Series volume: On To Victory.

The museum boasts over 30,000 artifacts, five galleries, and 16 heritage buildings on 325 acres of County Forest. Thanks to a generous bequest from Charles Matthews, a new 10,000 square foot expansion will open by 2030, featuring the Charles Matthews Automotive and Innovations Gallery.
