Record Breaking Year For Turtle Egg Protection

4,500. That’s how many turtle eggs the team at St. Clair Region Conservation Authority collected this year from the wild, the most they have collected in a single year. The work is to conserve turtle populations in the area, as turtles are vital to the ecosystem says Craig Paterson, Manager of Biology at St. Clair.

The eggs are incubated at the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority Turtle Lab and the team at Southern Ontario At-Risk Reptiles or SOARR. The work is headed up by species at risk biologist Scott Gillingwater who has been working in the field for 33 years.
