Freshwater Mussel Reintroduced For First Time In Canada
The Kidneyshell mussel is the first freshwater mussel to be reintroduction in Canada under the Species at Risk Act. It had not been seen in Medway Creek in 20 years, but a team including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Upper Thames River Conservation Authority released nearly 800 mussels into the creek. Freshwater mussels play an important role in the ecosystem says research scientist Todd Morris.
