Sault Ste. Marie's Millennium Forest Turns 25!

A ceremony was held outside the Roberta Bondar Building to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Millennium Forest — a small urban forest planted in 2000 to mark the turn of the millennium. The site features native species from the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence and Boreal Forest Regions and was created as a long-term educational and environmental resource.

The project was spearheaded by former Ministry of Natural Resources employee Peter Gagnon. Gagnon proposed replacing the building’s lawn with an urban forest to reflect the Ministry’s forestry mandate. His idea was embraced as part of a broader effort to mark the year 2000 with a legacy of sustainability and public engagement. The resulting forest has since become a living symbol of environmental stewardship and learning.
