Easter Island, the Truth Behind the Statues
One cannot get further from civilization and still experience hotels, electricity and automobiles. The most well known, and probably the only identifying symbol of the island are the famous statues or “moai”. Their interesting history, contrary to popular opinion, does not lie in magical myth. To truly experience the splendour of the island one must first realize the history. Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world, but 1,200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores.
