About Margaret Dickenson

Margaret Dickenson is a world-renowned cookbook author and Canadian TV show host.  She has received an impressive 6 international awards for her first cookbook, “From the Ambassador’s Table - Blueprints for Creative Entertaining” (Times Edition Singapore and Random House Canada), and for her self- published second cookbook, “Margaret’s Table - Easy Cooking and Inspiring Entertaining”

As a wife of a former Canadian foreign service officer, Larry Dickenson, Margaret has entertained tens of thousands of guests with limited assistance for the most part. During their 28 years in the foreign service, with assignments in eight different countries including ambassador to Kuwait and Indonesia, Margaret has developed her very own unique style for successful entertaining.

Her secret? To “wow” guests with personally developed, tantalizing recipes, mesmerizing food styling, and presentations, served with a true sense of occasion!

Margaret adores Maya Angelou‘s quote: “People will forget what you said but never forget how you made them feel“. Margaret is thrilled to enchant and dazzle her guests, creating sentiments that will remain with them long after they leave her home.

After the immediate success of “From the Ambassador’s Table”, Margaret wrote and hosted her own TV series “Margaret Sense of Occasion”.

Upon Larry’s retirement and with viewers’ enthusiastic requests for a second cookbook, Margaret and Larry worked as a devoted and loving team to self-publish “Margaret‘s Table - Easy Cooking and Inspiring Entertaining”.

Expanding on features laid out in the first book, “Margaret’s Table” offers even more menus including themed ideas, 150 unique personal recipes, brilliant, inspiring, and doable food styling, innovated presentation ideas over 70 captivating photos, dozens of tips (make ahead, shortcuts, alternative ingredients, techniques, etc.) as well as easy strategies and steps on how to make it all come together.

Margaret’s second television series, “Margaret's Table”, has received remarkable appreciation by audiences amazed to see how creative entertaining can be so easy and inspiring!

Indeed, Margaret’s passion and enthusiasm are infectious! You will be inspired to look into your pantry, refrigerator and around your home to find those extra touches of creativity that will make your dishes particularly special.

Margaret realized years ago when she was a child growing up on a farm in Thunder Bay, Ontario, that home entertaining was well appreciated by guests. While some feel too busy or intimidated to entertain, others are eager to expand their entertaining creativity and to make it easier - perhaps less formidable!
Margaret’s books are the gold reference in personal entertaining assisting both experienced and novice cooks to bring culinary magic to their tables with confidence, success and pizzazz.

No doubt, home entertaining is more popular than ever today, and the trend is very likely to continue.

Margaret always assures her audiences that “You can do it too!” However, the important thing is to entertain. She hopes that she will inspire you to do so.

Most recently, in December 2021, Margaret was honored with two prestigious awards in the entertaining category of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards held in Paris, France. “From the Ambassador’s Table” was recognized as the best historical first cookbook “Best of the Best - 25 Years”; while, “Margaret’s Table” received one of the very few special ‘Best of the Best - 25 Years” awards as a tribute to her expertise in entertaining.

In May 2009, at the Cordon d’Or - Gold Ribbon Academy of International Cookbook & Culinary Arts Awards (2008), Margaret was named "Culinarian of the Year". This reflected her remarkable successes, career development, contributions to charity and community activities as well as being a culinary ambassador for Canada. At the same awards ceremonies, she again received awards for the Best Published and the Best Unpublished recipes (2008).

In Sept 2006, Margaret self-published and released a stunning new cookbook, "Margaret’s Table - Easy Cooking & Inspiring Entertaining". It has won 4 major international awards, including the "Best of the Best Cookbook in the past 12 years" in the entertaining category at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Oct 2008. It also took the gold medal for Best Entertaining Cookbook in the World at the 2006 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Beijing, China in April 2007. From the thousands of cookbooks entered in the competition, Margaret’s Table won over 16 other finalists from 14 countries in the entertaining category. In June 2007, it won a bronze medal in the cookbook category at the 11th Annual International Independent Publisher Book Awards held in New York City. In January 2008, in St. Petersburg Florida, her book was recognized as the Best Cookbook on Entertaining at the Cordon d’Or - Gold Ribbon International Annual Cookbook and Culinary Arts Awards 2007.

Margaret’s first book, "From the Ambassador’s Table - Blueprints for Creative Entertaining", was named Best Cookbook in the World on Entertaining at the World Cookbook Fair in Périgueux, France (1998). It also has won three other international awards. In addition, Margaret repeatedly wins international culinary competitions for her innovative recipes and creative menus.

She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Cuisine Canada, Canadian Foreign Service Association as well as the Ontario & Ottawa Home Economics Associations.

Saleh of Ottawa said: “Margaret! I have to tell you this. I have just made your Portobello Deluxe Stuffed Chicken Breast and I followed it to the letter, making my own garlic butter and roasted red pepper cream sauce. And served it to my mother who ate it with complete disbelief and amazement. My next challenge will be the lamb medallions.I love the "Sauces" section as well as the "no Time, no Talent" Rabbit recipes and I am raving about your book to everyone I know.”

Fred of Ottawa said: “I wanted to take the time to thank you both for an awesome International Social Protocol, Social & Dining Etiquette workshop yesterday. All the different rules/expectations were fairly alien to me, so I certainly learned a lot and I now feel much more confident going into any future social/business situations. I'm sure much of the group feel the same way as well. I also want to thank you both for the very interesting conversations and anecdotes; it was immensely entertaining and informative. If you are holding anything similar in the future, I would definitely love to hear about it. I had a great time!”

Lois Siegel of Ottawa said: “Thank you for the wonderful International Social Protocol , Social & Dining Etiquette Course. I learned so much and wish I had taken this course decades ago. You made the information fun. I enjoyed every minute. I liked the demonstration of a place setting so we could see exactly how the plates and utensils were laid out. And at the reception and lunch, we could practice what we learned in a relaxed situation. Your examples about the real world of diplomacy really added to the session.”

Joan of Toronto said: “The evening at your home was outstanding. You are both so warm and welcoming to us, and your home and garden are a pleasure to visit. As for dinner, Margaret, your masterpiece was a gastronomic delight, served with such perfect timing and outstanding flare. You way surpass anyone we have come across in many dining rooms……around the world. Everything was so delicious. We went to a party on the following Friday night where the hostess likes to cook and makes much of her own food for her family parties. She was absolutely delighted to receive……your signed cookbook, emailing me the next morning by 9:00 a.m. to tell me so.”

Jean of Provence, France said: “What a thrilling few days we had in Ottawa. The most special was dinner chez vous. Margaret, you don’t realize what an inspiration you have been to me - - - from someone who was afraid to cook for anyone, you have inspired me to attempt dinner parties.”

Kent of Toronto said: “We certainly did enjoy our visit to Ottawa. I have eaten all over the world and never been so content with a meal. It was exceptional in my mind - - - certainly an eight star performance. The taste sensations, quality of food and ambiance was a feast for the senses in itself. Margaret, you are a brilliant chef. I am so thankful that we were included in such a special dinner. You both have a great deal to show the world what great hosting is all about. Thank you!”

Carole of Ontario said: “I wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying Margaret’s Table. I am raiding it for recipes to use at the Day Hospice where I work each week – especially the salads. I love your emphasis on simplicity and “the element of surprise”. I love the unusual combinations: ginger-squash soup, pear and almond, melon and cranberry. I am always looking for recipes that are interesting, delicious, healthy –– and they have to be beautiful too – and yours meet all those criteria!”

Linda of Osgoode said: “I was watching an episode of "Margaret's Table" this evening...the "crêpe" recipes and thoroughly enjoyed it. Crêpes are so easy to prepare and you gave me such great and inspiring ideas.”

Tony Marcantonio of CookOut Roaster & PigOut Rosters of Ottawa/Kempville said: “I'd like to thank you for your recipe for Salmon Snow Pea Boats - what a hit with the crowd. I had to increase the servings as it was a race between me eating them while trying to fill the serving tray. As you know there are always guests that have certain food dislikes - salmon and nut issues. So I took the liberty of modifying your recipe options by substituting the salmon with manicured red peppers - it was wonderful. Plus I enlisted the kids to make them - they had a blast.”

Tyler of Hamilton said: “We enjoyed a lot of quality time with family over Christmas. We were joking that we had a "Very Margaret Christmas", we made four of your recipes and they were all hits! I am now addicted to your shrimp with the zesty ginger mayo. It was a hit at every gathering we went to!”

Randa of Biot, France said: "We have had a succession of dinner parties, mostly for friends who come here in the summer. And I must tell you that a few nights ago, I served them with the "apéro" Margaret's delicious fig/feta appetizers (August 2011 recipe from this website). Everyone loved the combination and asked for the recipe. Bravo Margaret, I am sure that your books must be delightful. You always had a special touch for everything."

Diane of Manotick Station said: "As I've mentioned to you in person, I really enjoy your style of cooking which is fancy, yet simple and using everyday ingredients. I did purchase your book "Margaret's Table" and use it often and really enjoy the recipes I've prepared, including the versatile vinaigrettes that are at the back of the book. I sometimes include these in gift baskets, along with lettuce, cheese, nuts, dried fruits and people are always so impressed by the originality, but the surprise is when they assemble all the ingredients. The next day, they call me to get the vinaigrette recipes! The Mustard Herb Vinaigrette is my favorite. Another good seller is the Decadent White Chocolate Sauce. When we have company that stops by for an impromptu visit in the evening, I lather some of the previously prepared white chocolate sauce over fresh strawberries and serve. It's so easy to impress!"

Mimi of Ottawa said: "Thank you, Margaret and Larry, for the wonderful workshop. I learned a lot in one day. This class (Business Protocol, Social & Dining Etiquette at the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs, Carlton University, Ottawa) is really useful for me as I attend many social, diplomatic and business events in Canada, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. The hands-on practical segment was very helpful, and, I now will feel even more confident when I attend my next social event or business meeting. I would recommend this workshop to my friends."

Frances of Janetville, Ontario said: "Thank you for your gift of the CD of the TV series "Margaret’s Table". What a terrific performer you are, Margaret, to say nothing of the skill and enterprise to have invented such great recipes, not only delicious but photogenic, new and different. The episodes are a joy to watch . Each segment contains so much information. Even for those who don’’t "entertain", there is much to enjoy and learn from. Both my husband’s and my own cooking style and willingness to experiment now owe a great deal to your lessons in the past, and especially to your books where I often find it’s the small hints that stay with me. You’re so innovative. So down-to-earth and realistic, despite the out-of-this-world results. Now that I think of it, wasn’t the eclipse soup based on your lesson? I’d forgotten the name, forgotten even that it was yours until you mentioned the name, but obviously remembered the style! Our own recipes all doubtless owe a great deal to you –– especially the courage to make them our own rather than slavishly following someone else’s. I’ve learned from you to prepare lots of things ahead and freeze them. Thank you Margaret! See, your ideas are not only beautiful, but eminently practical as well. I must add – there is a quality about your TV presentation that reminds me quite a bit of Julia Child –– that quality that endeared her so much to women and girls and even to men of that time, and is so watchable even today. There’s something about your TV personality–– your care in choice of just the correct words and turn of phrase, your diction. They are perfect. Yet at the same time they seem so natural, so much "you"."

Amanda of Toronto said: "I just love your book, Margaret's Table. It was a Christmas gift and a true treasure. Each recipe is finely honed and easy to follow...and delicious! I also loved the photography in the book and often I pick up the book when my spirits need an uplift. The exquisite presentation is joyful and inspiring. I can see that you value people and are a true professional...with great recipes! How sweet that you describe your book as a "work of love". That love speaks out on each page. It is what makes the collection unique. When I read your book, I felt that I was dining at your table - - - or in your garden"

Jeannie of Calgary said: "I finally had a chance to watch each segment from beginning to end! I previously jumped to your crepes segment! Excellent production, the camera man had a knack for zooming in, the recipes and colours just jumps off the screen! I would like to purchase a couple for Mother's Day gifts of course!"

Liz of Ottawa said: "I bought your cookbook for my 21 year old daughter for Christmas and she is absolutely loving it. Having felt challenged in the kitchen before, she is now having fun making great food."

Helen of Ottawa said: "I have enjoyed Margaret's books and think her program is excellent. I always feel that I have learned something when I watch. Margaret's presentation of her dishes is great but, more importantly for me, she is also able to explain what she has done in a way that makes it doable for anyone. Thank you for making this program available."

Jean of Ottawa said: "Recently, you met my son, who is a chef, when he prepared food for a dinner party at one of your friend’s home. On that occasion, he obtained a copy of your cookbook, Margaret’s Table. Margaret, since seeing you at an International Wine & Food show here in Ottawa several years ago, I have sought out your recipes and entertainment guidelines. I love your new TV show and I wish you continued success with it."

Nathan of Ottawa said: "I have been watching the show Margaret's Table over the holidays, and like many others, I suspect, I have been inspired to have an actual dinner party for the first time in a while. Thank you to Margaret and the rest of the team for reminding us to take time and effort for that which makes life all the more lovely."

Gayle of Ottawa said: "I enjoyed your presentation at the Ottawa Food and Wine Show a few weeks ago. We have started planning weekly menus using some of the recipes in Margaret's Table. I have always liked to cook, but tend to "fly by the seat of my pants" making last minute decisions based on what I have on hand or what I run out to the store and purchase. You have motivated me to get a little more organized- planning ahead means that we have the ingredients on hand to try new recipes. Thank you".

Rosemary of Peterborough County said: "We made the Springtime Filets recipe last night and it was wonderful. The photo helped [a talented photographer!].....and your approach to the fiddleheads did seem to eliminate the bitterness. They seem to call wild garlic "wild leeks" in Peterborough County, but I know from the photo that they were the right specimen. Now I am thinking I will get your other book. It is so nice to have outstanding Canadian cookbooks. Thanks again."

Victor of Ottawa said: "Our very warm thank you for the invitation to your pre-summer reception. It is such a pleasure to attend: for elegant service, lovely food and so many conversations. You demonstrate yet again that careful preparations and attention from hosts will create an event to cherish. (And a lot of talent also helps!)."

Helen of Jakarta, Indonesia said: "I write so many messages to you in my mind, Margaret, re your terrific recipes. I know you must have a number of "number 1" fans and I am certainly one of them. I seldom make company dinner without a course or two, or at least a touch of Margaret in a sauce, butter or dressing. We had several guests for Christmas dinner and my first course was the strawberry almond soup. Last Saturday I had a going away party for 14 and the menu included the buckwheat crêpes with avocado (Avocado Crêpe Rolls) and well as the Bocconcini Tomato salad with the mustard herb vinaigrette - superb! I made the buckwheat and avocado crêpes before but not the salad. I had bought the bocconcini and had planned to look on the internet for a salad recipe. When I took out your book to review the crepe recipe, the book fell open at the Bocconcini salad, I hadn't remembered that you had that recipe but luckily the ribbon was there. I made 2.5 recipes had 2 appetizers and 4 courses - plenty of food but your salad, which I served as one of four items of the main course, was gone in a flash. Everyone loved it. Both of your books give me continuing pleasure and I often look at them again and again. I have a large selection of cookbooks and cooking magazines but your books are the ones I most frequently turn to for inspiration and also for basic recipes because I know they "work" in terms of unique taste, presentation, clear instructions and relative ease of preparation. Thank you for adding an extra touch of class and flare to my dinner parties."

Klaus and Barbara of Sarasota said: "We are thinking and talking a lot about our visit with you. It was, as always, a wonderful experience. Margaret, your talented creations were not only a pleasure for the eye but also so tasteful that we will not forget. One thing we have decided already. Even if we are alone we should have at least once a week a nice dinner creating something from your books. The appetizer of escargot was something we will try asap. We love escargot but the usual preparation just with butter is both not as tasty and not as healthy. Thanks for this new idea."

Elaine Giammetta of Gourmet Girl Magazine says: "Taking a closer look at the recipes in Margaret’s Table you will immediately discover where her talent lies. These are some of the most creative recipes that I’ve found in an entertaining book to date".

Camille of Ottawa says: "Last night my wife prepared a nice chicken dish. She used two recipes from Margaret’s Table. We had Asian-Glazed Chicken Morsels/Skewers with Middle East Rice Pilaf. It was terrific"

Russell of Ottawa says: "My sincere congratulations on your most recent award (Culinarian of the Year). You truly make our community proud and we strive to meet the benchmark you have set for our profession here in Ottawa. Bravo!"

Patricia of Ottawa said: "Just a short note to tell you that I stayed up until 1:00 A.M. reading your cookbook. I couldn't put it down! Rarely has a book—— any book, never mind a cookbook—— filled me with such deep joy. I simply couldn't sleep, because of the excitement and delight it engendered. Thank you for your patience in the store. How difficult it must be to 'flog' a book to skeptical passer by —— and how grateful is this passerby who was flogged! Please convey my appreciation also to Larry for his wonderful photographs and behind-the-scenes support. With heartfelt thanks and appreciation."

Mimi of Ottawa says: "I took my kids out to the Byward Market yesterday and did a little grocery shopping at an Italian market. I bought squid ink pasta and sun-dried tomatoes. Margaret, I made the "Extraordinary Sun-Dried Tomato Shrimp on Squid Ink Pasta"; it was delicious. The left over Garlic Wine Butter Sauce can also be used as the topping sauce for pan seared salmon for my dinner tonight. I also found fresh figs at Loblaws the other day and I made the "Mint Figs with Feta". My kids love the black pasta, they don't see it very often."

Rupert of Florida says: "Here we are ready for the latest dinner party using recipes from your books. The table looked like something you would have done yourself. The hostess was thrilled with your recipes. She even did the Butterscotch sauce with the Blackberries herself."

Laura of Scotland said: "I was on your website last night because it is mothers’ day in the UK and my friend wanted to make something special for her mom, she decided on the toffee chocolate dipped strawberries!"

Elaine of Grimsby said: "It was fun to visit in your home again and to be entertained with food in a manner that only Marg can achieve. Your cookbook, Margaret’s Table, is gorgeous. I have now read it all. I was going to turn down the corners of the pages of recipes that I would like to try, but realized that practically every page would be turned down so that idea was not really that helpful! I have marked all the ones that we sampled, and am kicking myself that I had two white chocolate mounds and did not try one of the chocolate coins.... Your presentations are gorgeous, and no one delighted in every one of them more than me."

Janet of Calgary says: I just wanted to say hello and tell you about the fun we have been having with your latest cookbook - Margaret’s Table. Last Sunday my husband and I prepared a lovely dinner using your recipes and everything was a resounding success from the Cajun roasted chicken to the coffee ice cream. Our guests were most impressed! Margaret’s Table has become my favorite gift-giving selection for friends, relatives and business acquaintances. It was a pleasure to meet you. We enjoyed both your cooking class and the etiquette and protocol presentation very much. If you are ever in need of an assistant I’d love to help out with any of your projects. Tonight we made ‘‘Garlicky Feta and Pecan Spinach Salad’’ and ‘‘Portobello Deluxe Stuffed Chicken Breasts’’. The flavours were amazing! Dessert was ‘‘Toasted Almond and Currant Clusters’’. Sunday dinners at our house are becoming quite the sensation!

John of Ottawa says: "What a great honor to have "Margaret's Table" win another Cookbook Award. We are not surprised as your books are almost always open on Betty's counter as she prepares another delicious recipe. Larry's superb photography certainly wets one's appetite. Betty often comments on the "tips" at the end of the recipe, always helpful for the transition of preparation to the table. Although it may seem trivial, the indexing in your books is excellent with good cross referencing, a feature Betty enjoys when looking up a recipe."

Mimi of Ottawa says: "I am not surprised at all that "Margaret's Table" won an award again. This is the BEST cookbook of all. The pictures, details and the uncomplicated recipes make this book a winner of all time. Margaret has the most exquisite food, which is always tastefully presented. It oozes class and sumptuousness. Her lamb kills me, it’s so good. Also, Margaret’s recipes are children friendly and my kids enjoy her delicious healthy choice of ingredients."

Mimi from Ottawa adds: "I made the "Caramel Mango Tart" for my kids today (without the whisky and the liqueur, of course). My kids love it so I showed your cook book to them. They went through your cook book selecting their dinner! We ended up cooking the Sesame Seed Crusted Pork Tenderloin because I have all the ingredients right there in my kitchen. What I love about your cook book is that the ingredients are so easy and they are something that most household already have in their kitchens."

Mary of Ottawa says: "Your book, Margaret's Table, is wonderful -- easy, explanatory, friendly, communicative and with outstanding photography! Better than Julia Child."

Vera N. from Kitchener says: "I have purchased both your books along with the VHS tape on Christmas Entertaining. The books are both excellent and have become my favourites. I think I like your latest book, Margaret's Table - Easy Cooking & Inspiring Entertaining even more because of the recipes and I realize that a lot of them are from your TV series. On your TV series I enjoyed watching you purchase and make the food and how lovely you set the table and gave so many valuable lessons in entertaining. You make it simple and exotic."

Harry of Ottawa says: "My favourite recipe is the roasted red pepper soup. It never occurred to me anyone would make a soup out of red peppers. Never occurred to me I could enjoy it as much as I do."

Megan, 5 years old from Santa Barbara, California requesting Coconut Crusted Shrimp (page 91 in From the Ambassador’s Table) said: "Mom, for my birthday, can you please make those yummy shrimp with the coconut that Margaret served us last summer?"

Marilyn of Ottawa says: "Your 'system' of entertaining is unique. And your book awards recognize that you have shared your ideas in an admirable way."

Barbara of Sarasota, Florida says: A few days ago we had a dinner party and I did as a dessert the "Lemon Phyllo Napoleons", out of your book. The response from my Swiss guest was "I am not into desserts, but this one is heavenly" and the question came up where to get your cook book.

Diane of Stittsville said: "Some of my friends had a birthday potluck party for me. All the dishes were from Margaret’s Table and my gifts were all the serving dishes in which the food arrived. I thought it was just a normal potluck - the theme
was a huge surprise. I should have known that giving all my friends your cookbook for Christmas last year would pay off! Needless to say, we ate like Kings!"

Maggie of New York City says: "THANK YOU. The book is just wonderful –– as good as the first with that wonderful conveying of confidence that YOU can do this. I am not convinced but I am emboldened and enlightened and will experiment. Truly, it will be a treasured addition. I am going to buy one on Amazon for a friend. When I go to her house I curl up and read cookbooks so this will be wonderful for her. It is a beautiful book and the photos are just marvelous –– and I loved the TIPS and encouragements. I really am impressed and grateful."

Jessica who received "Margaret’s Table" as a shower gift before her wedding says: "Just wanted to let you know that I followed a recipe from "Margaret's Table" Cookbook - the Garlicky Spinach Pecan Salad - and it was the best salad that I have ever eaten (if I do say so myself)!!"

Helen Vanwell of Jakarta, Indonesia says: "I want to say how extraordinary the book is. I have read it from cover to cover at least twice and I still enjoy looking at it again and again. I love all the hints and notes, it is so thorough. I am pleased to say that my modes operandi is in line with yours, Margaret. I have some hors d’oeuvres which freeze well and I always have a supply of these on hand, also some soups and a sauce or two. Your book gives me ideas for building up my freezer supply. I am almost afraid to make the butterscotch sauce because it is so tempting that it may not make it to the freezer. We both remember the blackberry butterscotch cocktail fondue you served during our last visit to your home. The best dessert I have ever had, bar none."

Joanne says: "I love your recipes and your books. Easy to follow, chatty. It feels like I have a friend in the kitchen. Here are three quick stories about Margaret’s Table: (1) I gave three of your wonderful books to my Mother/Father, brother and his wife, sister and her husband. We had a food theme for Christmas, so I bought a basket, napkins, wrapping, decoration, and filled the basket with items common to your recipes: rice vinegar, chili paste, vermicelli noodles, etc. Then added in bamboo sticks, ramekins, porcelain spoons. It was a fun and attractive gift to give. My mom called before the end of the week, she'd read your book cover to cover, placed it on her coffee table for a while. (2) I cooked the Asian noodles for women from work in December and have an encore request for them when we do an informal meal for my boss. (3) I had 11 friends from high school descend for a "sleep over". I picked the Asian theme (bul-go-gee, drumsticks, chicken brochette, garlic shrimp with ginger mayonnaise, korean noodles) and just kept the food coming about 1/2 hour apart. They loved it, you made me look very good. They were particularly impressed with the balsamic red wine reduction!"

Donna Jakowec says: I bought your book a few months back after you made some suggestions that would be good dinner choices for my children such as the salmon, the quick spiced chicken wings/drumsticks. Both of these were easy to prepare and very tasty. The real winning meal for my 4 year old son, Desmond, was the Chopsticks of Oriental Marinated Lamb. My son (and my husband, for that matter) was thrilled by my presentation of the lamb. Even though I made 10 sticks, my son kept gobbling them up and we quickly ran out. I should point out that I did not use lamb tenderloins but opted for lamb that my local market uses for their lamb kebobs. After marinating and frying them up, I was pleased that the lamb pieces were so tender, whew! I put 2 pieces on each chopstick and placed 4 chopsticks in a rice-filled tall beer glass. I was so thrilled with the surprise of my boys that I snapped a few pictures. Thanks so much for creating such a wonderful book and I look forward to trying out more of the recipes.

Frances Emery, Ontario says: Margaret’s innovative recipes, her down-to-earth instructions and her mouth-watering descriptions are matched only by her husband’s luscious photographs. I can’t wait to try out some of the new recipes in this book. The ones in her former book, now almost unavailable, I know to be terrific - - easy, tasty and memorable. These new ones look even better if possible.

Debra Hulley, Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers says: "You don’’t realize until you start reading how many great ideas and tips there are. The Basic Recipes you have shared are pure gold."

Debbie from Manama, Bahrain says "Margaret...I adore your book and have been using it constantly! You always were the most amazing and eloquent hostess, organizer and cook...you've just got better!"

Renée Zecha of Singapore says: "Thought I ought to let you know that for the past two days I have been using my gym (cycling and treadmill) time most productively by incorporating Margaret's new cookbook into the literature while I exercise. Believe it or not, I have read it virtually cover to cover. And for a novice like myself, those straightforward no-nonsense tips, from shelf life in fridge/freezer to sources and alternatives, are a Godsend. No other cookbook does it in quite this user-friendly manner. I have now truly revived my interest in the kitchen, especially now that I am in Singapore where I do have a smart albeit far from industrial size (!) kitchen... .Bravo, long live Margaret's and Larry's insatiable appetite for living life to the full, inside and outside the kitchen... Lots of love, from a most appreciative reader."

Alison Fryer, General Manager of The Cookbook Store, Toronto says "For those of us not lucky enough to be at the Dickenson’s dinner table, not to worry, Margaret comes to you! Loaded with tips, this book is ideal for novice entertainers as well as professionals and those seeking fresh inspiration. Margaret’s Table is guaranteed to make hosting a party relaxing, and actually enjoyable!"

Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first woman Astronaut and Physician, Photographer, Author says "Combining the best of both my personal worlds of photography and the need for easy cooking, Margaret’s Table is a luscious treat for both the eye and the palate! The original recipes reflect her passion for the science and art of nutrition and sharing. After experiencing her kitchen first hand, I am delighted that Margaret has given all of us the chance to emulate such a master! "

Colette Watson, Vice-President, Rogers tv and President, Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) says "Margaret’s food creations and warm hospitality are the best I’ve ever experienced. This book is a great way to share the experience with your family and friends. Her recipes are stunning for two reasons: 1. incredibly wonderful to eat; and 2. incredibly easy to make!"

Grete Hale of Ottawa says: "Your new cookbook is exquisite. What a joy to turn each page and feast on what you and Larry have created. Duyff, MS, RD, CFCS, Author, American Dietetic Association Complete Food and Nutrition Guide says "Once again, Margaret demonstrates her remarkable ability to inspire both the everyday cook and the culinary professional. With her extraordinary style, her recipes are imaginative, easy, excitingly delicious and always stunningly presented! I know. I’ve savored her culinary talents as a guest in her home. This is a "must have cookbook – and a fascinating read!"

Not only does it contain superb recipes and inspired ideas for presentation, but also innumerable secrets for making entertaining easy and fun."

Margaret's Table goes on the air
While at grocery stores or at the bank Margaret always got compliments about her program. People would always ask, "When are you going back on air?" Well their question has been answered. This article by Eddie Rwema appeared in the 19 November 2010 issue of Ottawa This Week.

Book review by Elaine Giammetta, President, The Gourmet Girl, Inc.
Classic elegance and old world charm are the key elements in this latest publication from Canada's Margaret Dickenson. Although the book contains 150 recipes, the emphasis is on entertaining and food styling. Taking a closer look at the recipes in Margaret’s Table you will immediately discover where her talent lies. These are some of the most creative recipes that I’ve found in an entertaining book to date (21 July 2009).

Embassy Chef Challenge dishes out exotic flavours for charity

You know your event is growing when even the Irish ambassador’s official residence, a sprawling mansion in Rockcliffe Park, just doesn’t feel roomy enough anymore.

Organizers of an annual fundraiser for Crohn’s and colitis moved this year’s sold-out Embassy Chef Challenge from the ambassador’s residence to the John G. Diefenbaker Building, also known as Old City Hall, with the hope of providing more elbow room for its food, wine and beer-tasting guests.

Some 300 attendees of the $100-a-ticket event spent the evening Thursday sampling exotic and delicious dishes created by chefs with the British, Hungarian, Moldova, Philippines, Trinidad & Tobago, Spain and Thai diplomatic missions. The People’s Choice Award went to Chef Jil Aranasfrom the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines while the winner of the Embassy Chef Challenge was Chef Resa Solomon-St. Lewis, from the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

In the crowd were former Liberal foreign affairs minister John Manley, now head of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, and his wife, Judith, chatting with retired diplomat Larry Dickenson. His wife, cookbook author Margaret Dickenson, was on the event’s judging panel with Ottawa chefs Matthew Carmichael, Cory Haskins and Kent Van Dyk.

Dr. David Mack, head of gastroenterology at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and director of the CHEO Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre, attended. Later, he helped to accept a $100,000 cheque from the IBD Foundation, represented by its president, Michele Hepburn. The money — raised from this and last year’s fundraiser — will go toward purchasing equipment for a IBD procedure room at CHEO.

Among the hottest items sold by charity auctioneer Kent Browne was a signed Sidney Crosby hockey jersey (it got scooped up for a grand) and an embassy dinner for 10 that fetched $8,000. It will be hosted by British High Commissioner Howard Drake and his wife, Gill, at their official residence, the historic Earnscliffe. No bangers and mash here. 2014 Embassy Chef Challenge winner and 2015 competitor Mathieu DesJardins will give guests a fine dining experience.
