In Focus: I Am Muslim

In Focus: I Am Muslim takes a look at Muslim families living in Simcoe County. Given the terrorist activities of extremist organizations that claim to be Islamic Faith, this sector of our community continues to deal with the consequences due to the actions of others. Meet Dr. Atif Butt who, as well as being a medical officer at Base Borden, is a family man and proud to be Canadian and a Muslim. He says it's important for his children to realize and appreciate the freedom and rights that Canada offers while at the same time continues to follow the path of Islamic Faith as prescribed by Quran. Karen Dietrich has converted to the Islamic Faith after going on a spiritual quest to find a religion that feels right to her. "It was like a key had been fit into my heart and turned and my heart was opened and unlocked." Arsalan Rafiq, who is trying to bring his wife to Canada from Pakistan, believes that you cannot blame an entire religious faith for something a small group of people have done. "We're just like any other family with the same needs, wants and desires that life presents to all of us... Talk to us... We are good people" says Fatima Uddin. Misconceptions about wearing of the hijab are explained, and the meaning behind the five-times-a-day prayer is also discussed. In Focus: I Am Muslim puts a human face on individuals of Islamic Faith and shows us another perspective that is lost within the present day climate of fear and hate.
